At the crossroads of interests

A group of people with a life-long employment at the Moldovan Railways Company (CFM) now risk of being left without a roof over their heads.

A group of people with a life-long employment at the Moldovan Railways Company (CFM) now risk of being left without a roof over their heads. It is the sad story of the inhabitants of a former hostel for employees without families of the State Enterprise Moldovan Railways Company, which for almost two decades turned into a vicious circle in an attempt to privatize the rooms in which they lived for years. The building, a two-storey old construction, is located right in the center of the Moldovan capital. It seems that the 21 acres-area of land on which the hostel is located, and which costs about one million Euro, is looked for heavily from private interests, since all state institutions are wrecking any attempt by the tenants to privatize the space they live in. Find out more about this case from the documentary “Umbrella” and the investigation article "At the crossroads of interests: 34 families are prevented from privatizing their housing in a former hostel of the CFM." The investigation is carried out within the project "Violation of Labor Rights in the Republic of Moldova: Journalistic Investigations", implemented by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in the Republic of Moldova in partnership with the Journalistic Investigation Center.
