Foreign Policy Newsletter 11/237 November 2025: Will Moldova’s accession to the EU pass through Tiraspol — or not?

This edition of the FES/APE Foreign Policy Bulletin examines one of the most sensitive and consequential issues for the future of the Republic of Moldova: the relationship between the reintegration of the Transnistrian region and the country’s European integration path.

This edition of the FES/APE Foreign Policy Bulletin examines one of the most sensitive and consequential issues for the future of the Republic of Moldova: the relationship between the reintegration of the Transnistrian region and the country’s European integration path. The Bulletin encourages an open, realistic, and solution-oriented discussion on how Moldova can advance simultaneously in its EU accession process and in restoring its territorial integrity, for the benefit of all its citizens. The publication features two in-depth interviews with former Deputy Prime Ministers for Reintegration, Alexandru Flenchea and Cristina Lesnic, who offer a clear-eyed assessment of current challenges and possible avenues for moving the Transnistrian dossier forward. In his analysis, journalist Evgheni Ceban explores in depth whether Moldova’s path toward the European Union can progress without a prior settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, and what realistic scenarios exist for managing this issue in parallel with the accession process. The edition’s editorial, signed by Anatolie Golea, examines the options and constraints of reintegration in the context of EU accession, presenting possible scenarios and arguing for the need for firm and realistic policies toward the Tiraspol regime.
