Foreign Policy Newsletter 08/246, August 2026: The Drone Threat at the Mouths of the Danube: A Shared Challenge for the Republic of Moldova and Romania

Russia’s war against Ukraine has transformed the area between the Black Sea, the Danube Delta and southern Moldova into a shared risk zone. Drone incursions and attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure along the Danube demonstrate that military security, the protection of critical infrastructure and regional economic stability are increasingly interconnected. The new edition of the FES/APE Foreign Policy Bulletin examines the drone threat facing Moldova and Romania, the need to develop effective and coordinated detection and neutralisation systems, as well as opportunities for closer cooperation with Ukraine. 

The edition also addresses the economic dimension of the war of attrition: the importance of Danube ports, the security of trade routes and Ukrainian exports, and the ways in which Russia combines military pressure with threats and disinformation in an effort to undermine regional cooperation.
