The „Socio-Economic Encyclopedia of Moldova” marks 35 Years of Moldova’s Independence

The publication documents 35 key events that shaped the country’s development, one for each year of independence, and traces Moldova’s journey from the collapse of the Soviet economy to its current path towards European Union membership, examining major economic crises, political turning points and structural challenges.

Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Moldova, in partnership with Expert-Grup, launched the „Socio-economic Encyclopedia” on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Republic of Moldova’s independence. The publication documents 35 key events that shaped the country’s development, one for each year of independence, and traces Moldova’s journey from the collapse of the Soviet economy to its current path towards European Union membership, examining major economic crises, political turning points and structural challenges.

The analysis highlights progress in macroeconomic stabilisation and European integration, while pointing to persistent challenges, including slow economic growth, emigration, demographic decline and the gap in living standards between Moldova and EU member states in Central and Eastern Europe. It also examines the consequences of weak institutions, state capture and dependence on external markets and energy suppliers. The publication concludes that Moldova’s sustainable development depends on stronger institutions, economic diversification and a shift towards a growth model based on investment, productivity and exports. While European integration provides a strategic framework for this transformation, lasting economic convergence will require addressing the country’s long-standing structural vulnerabilities.
